The Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the Argentine Football Association signed a strategic partnership in London.
The agreement falls within the framework of strengthening Abu Dhabi’s partnerships with international sports institutions and bodies, in order to organise and host elite international sporting events.
The great public successes achieved by football tournaments and the affinity Latin football fans have gained for Abu Dhabi, especially during the FIFA Club World Cup, was an impetus for hosting the historic Argentine football tournament in the capital of the UAE.
The Argentine Super Cup was announced to be held at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on 20 January 2022.
For the first time in the history of the Argentine championship, the Super Cup was held outside its country of origin, with Abu Dhabi playing host this time.
On 17 January 2022, a plane carrying the Argentine football teams Club Atlético Boca Juniors and Racing Club de Avellaneda landed after a 22-hour long flight.
Boca Juniors trained at Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Stadium in preparation for the match, while Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium was designated for the Racing Club’s training.
Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Ain Sports and Cultural Club, Chairman of the Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Committee for Managing the Operations of Al Ain Football Club Company, crowned Racing Club de Avellaneda as champions of the Argentine Super Cup after they defeated Club Atlético Boca Juniors by two goals to one.
Facundo Roncaglia scored the lead goal for Boca Juniors, while Racing Club equalised through Johan Carbonero. Gonzalo Piovi scored the goal that won Racing the title in the 7+90th minute.
Racing won its first Super Cup title after losing the title in 2021, thus raising its tally of titles to 39, while Boca lost the Super Cup title for the fourth time.
