Abu Dhabi to host FIDE Torch Relay
Abu Dhabi will host the FIDE Torch Relay at Marina Mall, sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and organised by the Abu Dhabi Chess and Mind Games Club.
The selection of Abu Dhabi as the venue for the Olympic Torch comes as part of the celebration of the centenary of the International Chess Federation as well as the capital’s successful bid to host the 2028 Chess Olympiad.
Abu Dhabi won the bid to host the final leg of the Olympic Torch Relay before it reaches Hungary next month, coinciding with the start of the 2024 Chess Olympiad scheduled to take place in Budapest from 10 to 23 September.
The International Chess Federation has selected 12 cities around the world, including Abu Dhabi, to participate in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1924.
A photo exhibition at Marina Mall will coincide with the Torch Relay, showcasing the history of chess and the diversity of its practitioners, alongside an exhibition match featuring the World Youth Champion and African and Arab Champion Grandmaster Ahmed Al Adli going up against 15 players at the same time.
Grandmaster Mohammed Al Modiahki, President of the Qatar Chess Association and member of the Executive Office of the International Chess Federation, will also participate in the match, playing against 15 players.
