Olympic Champions and Defending Winners Headline Full Elite Fields for WTCS Abu Dhabi 2026
Abu Dhabi Sports Council has announced a world-class elite line-up for the Modon World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Abu Dhabi powered by TAQA 2026, with Olympic champions, defending winners and leading international contenders set to race on Hudayriyat Island on 13–14 November.
Both the men’s and women’s start lists are full, with 65 athletes competing in each individual race. New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde and Germany’s Lisa Tertsch will return to defend the titles they claimed in Abu Dhabi in 2025, joining a field that includes Paris 2024 Olympic gold medallists Tim Hellwig and Laura Lindemann, Rio 2016 Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen and men’s WTCS standings leader Vasco Vilaca.
Staged alongside the World Triathlon Multisport Championships Abu Dhabi 2026, WTCS Abu Dhabi will bring the sport’s biggest names to the island as more than 4,000 age-group athletes gather for the Championships from 13–22 November. These two major international events will give athletes and supporters the opportunity to watch elite competition as part of their own world championship experience.
Wilde, Hauser and Vilaça headline a compelling men's line-up
Defending Abu Dhabi champion Hayden Wilde returns following a remarkable September in which he contested four major races across four consecutive weekends. The New Zealander claimed victories at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice and the French Riviera T100, alongside second place at the Supertri Pro Series Final in Jersey and fifth at the WTCS Championship Final in Pontevedra.
Wilde will face a formidable field that includes Australia's Matthew Hauser and Portugal's Vasco Vilaça, who are set for another showdown following their dramatic encounter at the 2026 WTCS Championship Final in Pontevedra. Hauser claimed victory in an electrifying sprint finish, while Vilaça secured his maiden world championship title. With both athletes confirmed for Abu Dhabi, their anticipated rematch adds another compelling storyline to the men's race. The men's field also features Germany's Tim Hellwig and Lasse Lührs, both gold medallists in the Mixed Relay at Paris 2024, alongside South Africa's Henri Schoeman, who claimed individual bronze at Rio 2016, and Spain's David Cantero, the 2024 U23 World Champion.
Defending champion Tertsch faces Olympic medallists and former winners
Germany’s Lisa Tertsch will aim to retain her Abu Dhabi crown against a women’s field featuring established champions and leading international contenders.
Germany's Laura Lindemann will be among those challenging for the title, arriving in Abu Dhabi as an Olympic gold medallist following Germany's victory in the Mixed Relay at Paris 2024. Lindemann played a decisive role in securing the gold medal, producing a strong final leg to hold off the competition and seal a memorable victory for her country.
The USA’s Gwen Jorgensen brings a significant connection to the event’s history. Winner of the inaugural Abu Dhabi World Triathlon Series race in 2015, Jorgensen went on to claim Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and will return to compete more than a decade after her first victory in the UAE capital.
Great Britain’s Kate Waugh, who won her U23 world title in Abu Dhabi in 2022, and Luxembourg’s Jeanne Lehair, winner of WTCS Yokohama in 2025, complete the headline names confirmed for the women’s race.
National teams take centre stage in the Mixed Team Relay
Following the individual races on Friday 13 November, attention will turn to the Mixed Team Relay on Saturday 14 November. Teams of two men and two women will represent their nations, with each athlete completing a swim, bike and run before handing over to their teammate. The fast-paced format brings national pride and team tactics to the forefront, offering spectators another compelling day of elite racing on Hudayriyat Island.
Two events, one island
The action begins on Friday 13 November with the elite individual sprint races, before national teams line up for the Mixed Relay Series on Saturday 14 November. With Olympic Qualification Ranking Points, World Triathlon Ranking points and prize money at stake, both days promise closely contested racing.
For the thousands of athletes arriving for the World Triathlon Multisport Championships, it is also an opportunity to watch the sport’s biggest names compete at the same destination where they will pursue their own world championship ambitions. Across ten days, Hudayriyat Island will welcome racing in duathlon, cross triathlon, cross duathlon, aquathlon, long-distance triathlon and aquabike, bringing the international triathlon and multisport community together in the capital.
Residents, visiting supporters and families can also experience the championship atmosphere for themselves on Saturday 21 November, with 1km and 3km Fun Runs, timed 5km and 10km runs, and the Hudayriyat NextGen Tri for young athletes aged 4–16. These community events, by Modon in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sprots Council, offer participants of all abilities the opportunity to cross the same finish line as athletes competing on the world stage.
Hosting this elite field alongside the World Triathlon Multisport Championships powered by TAQA and the community events brings world-class competition and community participation together in one destination. From watching Olympic champions race to taking part in the community runs and Hudayriyat NextGen Tri, residents and visitors of all ages can experience the Championships for themselves.
