Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, the Al Mughira Grand Kingfish Championship for Women will commence from Friday, 21 February, and will continue until Sunday, 23 February, as part of the Abu Dhabi Grand Kingfish Championship series, which is organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club. The competitions will launch from three main locations: Abu Dhabi, Al Mirfa, and Delma Island.
The Championship will witness the participation of both professional and amateur anglers, who will compete for total cash prizes valued up to AED 838,000, allocated to the top 60 places, in addition to daily prizes. Registration is open via the Championship’s official Instagram account @ADKingfish.
Saif Saif Al Suwaidi, a member of the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, stressed the Club’s pivotal role in providing logistical and technical support for the Championship, noting that the competitions enhance the status of heritage marine sports and provide a unique opportunity for women to compete and win valuable prizes.
Al Suwaidi added that the Championship is not limited to competition only, but also contributes to consolidating Abu Dhabi’s position as a global sports and heritage destination, reflecting the UAE’s rich cultural heritage, in addition to its role in empowering women in various fields, including marine sports.
Zayed Sari Al Mazrouei, Head of the Events Department at the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority and member of the Championship’s organising committee, said that the event reflects Abu Dhabi's vision to preserve the UAE’s marine heritage and promote sustainable heritage sports, noting that dedicating the Championship to women comes in appreciation of their active role in society and various fields.
Al Mazrouei added: "After the great success achieved by the Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship last January, we continue this momentum with the Al Mughira Grand Kingfish Championship, under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which reflects the leadership's keenness to consolidate marine heritage and promote sports and cultural tourism."
Saeed Khalifa Al Muhairi, Director of the Special Sports Department at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and member of the organising committee, confirmed that the Council is keen to support events that combine sports and heritage, as it provides all facilities to ensure an exceptional experience for the participants, noting that coordination with the relevant authorities is proceeding at the highest level to ensure the Championship’s success.
The Al Mughira Grand Kingfish Championship for Women is one of four major championships in the Abu Dhabi Kingfish Championship Series. The season champion who collects the highest number of points across three championships will receive a car, while the season champion who achieves the highest total points across four championships will also receive a car. The winner of the heaviest kingfish in the Men’s competition in the Abu Dhabi Championships will receive a fishing boat in addition to AED 50,000, and the same applies to the winner in the Women’s competition.
